Annuities is a great product, they usually offer higher and better rates than a CD and your funds are a guaranteed return. You usually have to start and annuity w/ five to six thousand dollars and be able to place it aside for 6 years, normally. They are really great and the interest compunds which mean you earn interest on top of interest, great product. It’s basically a long term insurance policy involving money. They aren’t FDIC insured but I think they have a different type of insurance.

CD’s are about the lowest risk you can get - they are guaranteed not to lose money. The tradeoff is that they provide very low returns (currently only about 2-3%).
Mutual funds range from very conservative (bond funds) to very aggressive (emerging market funds, small company stock funds). In between would be balanced funds (that contain both stocks and bonds) and index funds (that invest primarily in stocks of large, well-established companies).
Generally, the more short-term risk you’re willing to take, the greater the long-term returns. Small companies and emerging markets have the greatest potential for growth, but also the greatest risk for losing money.
I disagree with one of the other answerers - annuities are usually bad investments. They are basically mutual funds, but because they are offered by insurance companies, you pay an extra layer of fees that take away from your returns.
